Life Cycle Assessment Of Laptops And Printed Notes Engineering Essay
Life pedal Assessment Of Laptops And Printed Notes engine room EssayFor the last few geezerhood, the society had started to pulmonary tuberculosis electronic devices for development instead of victimisation printed piece especi only(prenominal)y for university students. However, the written report is still use for printing and other impost. newspaper publisher is whizz of the main causes of global warming as trees pull up stakes be cut down and processed into wood as wood is the main ingredient of producing paper. Without trees, there pass on be less photosynthesis phenomena occurring to undertake carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is produced by merciful activities such as breathing, power generation, combustion etc. To reduce the cutting of trees, several electronic devices have been introduced to replace the paper apply for several purposes.1.2 Life round of golf AssessmentLife Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a method used to dismember the impacts caused by products and services to the environment surrounding. It is used to contain the life cycle from the extraction of raw materials, processing, transport, use, reuse, recycling or disposal of the products and services. in that location are quatern stages in LCA which includes goal identification, life cycle inventory, impact analysis and improvement analysis. LCA is used to identify and analyze the input and output of materials, energy and waste emissions in solid, liquid and splasheous state in order to make the improvement from the environmental impacts determined. (Life cycle assessment n.d)2. Goal and scope definition2.1 Goal of this studyThe goal of this study is to compare the spherical calefacient Potential (GWP) of the service between demoing printed lecture notes and reading lecture notes on the laptop calculating machine. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of printed and computer document as learning materials for an undergraduate engineering student of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus is conducted.The LCA of this study is done by the undergraduate Civil Engineering students of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus. The results of this study is based on the two reports titled Scanning Life Cycle Assessment of Printed and E-paper Documents based on the iRex Digital Reader by Sebastiaan Deetman and Ingrid Odegard in March 2009 and Life Cycle Assessment of a Laptop Computer and its Contribution to Greenhouse Gas Emissions by Anh Hoang, Wei li Tseng, Shekar Viswanathan and Howard Evans. The study will compare the environment impacts of the printed paper and laptop.2.2 Scope of this studyScope of this study consists of function and running(a) units. Function of the product will be analyzed and functional units will be included in this study is used to make comparison of the services and the LCA of the laptop.2.2.1 FunctionLaptop can be useful in reading lecture notes and making notes in a document files. T hese are the functions that will be analyzed. However, laptop can also be used to read online newspaper, journals, magazine and for doing assignments. These functions will not be included in this study but they can definitely help in reducing the environment impacts. The use of Microsoft Office software in laptop enables students to make own notes and read lecture notes for e-paper and printed documents. This function has made the comparison between computer documents and printed paper viable.In this report, it is assumed that the time taken for a student to transfer lecture notes from the BlackBoard System used by Swinburne University of Technology into the computer is the same. Therefore, it can be excluded from this study because initially, twain alternatives need to use this function. Besides, the wireless connection in Swinburne University should be neglected as both printed notes and e-notes require the wireless connection to download the lecture notes from the BlackBoard Sy stem.2.2.2 Product Systema. ManufacturingThe manufacturing and assembly of components for the laptop including packaging result in releasing nursery gases.b. DistributionTo distribute the laptop to retails, superman of the laptop is included in this study. The greenhouse gases also will be released through the transports used.c. UseThe usage of the laptop will be quadruple years equivalent to the quaternity years course. The total usage of laptop including lecture, tutorial and self-study per unit for one week is included in this study. So, the laptop usage for one year can be calculated.d. End of lifeEnd of life in this study is about recycling a laptop that can no longer be used or function anymore. The laptop will be recycled under the US recycling requirements.2.2.3 Functional UnitThe functional unit of LCA is to study the service of the paper used for printing notes for a student which is quaternity years as the engineering courses for Swinburne University of Technology tak es four years to complete. However, the laptop is assumed to replace all the printed notes in this study throughout the four years course. The assumptions of the laptop and printed paper that need to be taken into the consideration in this study are as shown as below.Assumptions1. The life span of the laptop and newspaperwoman are four years as engineering courses take four years.2. Plug is used for laptop for all the time instead of using battery.3. Laser printer is used for printing.4. Wooden uncoated paper is used for printing.5. The printed paper is in greyscale.2.2.4 Impact CategoriesIn this study, the laptop usage and the printed paper are compared to analyze the data of greenhouse gas emission for both alternatives which contributes to Global Warming Potential (GWP).3. Life Cycle Inventory (LCI)In this report, the data collected are the manufacturing, distribution, use and end-of-life of a standard laptop. The CO2-e emission of each stage are also calculated and included in the report.3.1 Inventory of Laptop Computer3.1.1 ManufacturingIt includes the manufacturing and assembly of components as well as manufacturing and assembly of laptop which comes with packaging. On the full, the greenhouse gas emission is approximately 160 kg CO2-e which is obtained from the graph on a report entitled Carbon Footprint of a Typical bloodline Laptop from Dell which is written by Markus Stutz (2010).3.1.2 DistributionTransportation of laptop by all authority to assembly locations and distributed to local retails, including cargo ships to customers themselves. For this report, the greenhouse gas emission of distribution of laptop is approximately 50 kg CO2-e (Stutz 2010) following the US region. However, the transportation may vary with region. So the emissions will vary as well but not much difference.3.1.3 UseThe life span of the laptop is estimated to be four years which is assumed to be used for the whole four years course of engineering students of Swinburne Un iversity Sarawak. One laptop is used by one student only. It is assumed that for one week, the total usage ( hrs) of laptop is 28 hours inclusive of 3 hours lecture, 2 hours tutorial and 2 hours of self-study per unit. There are four units altogether so 7 hours multiply by 4 equals to 28 hours. Assuming two semesters which consists of 32 weeks (inclusive of exam weeks) are equivalent to one year, the total hours is 896 hours. Hence, for four years, the total hour is 3584 hours. To calculate the power uptake and greenhouse gas emission, the mode taken into consideration is Active mode. Based on the report written by the students of National University entitled Life Cycle Assessment of a Laptop Computer and its Contribution to Greenhouse Gas Emissions, the electricity used for average Active mode is 0.032 kWh. The power consumption is tabulated in the table below.Electricity Used (kWh)Hours for 4 YearsPower consumed (kWh)Active (Average)0.0323584114.69Based on the report too, the for mula is converted to kWh. Hence, the greenhouse gas emission for usage is equal to 45.88 kg CO2-e.3.1.4 End-of-lifeOnce the laptop can no longer be used or it is unable to function anymore, the laptop will be sent for recycling. Sometimes laptops can be reformatted but it will not perform as well as before. Hence, according to Stutz 2010, it is assumed that 75 percent of the laptop will be recycled under the US recycling requirements. So, the greenhouse gas emission of -30 kg CO2-e is obtained.StagesKg CO2-e releasedManufacturing160Distribution50Use45.88End of life-30Total225.88Table 1 The CO2e emission for laptop3.2 Print AlternativeOther alternative is that, the lecture notes, tutorial saddlery and solutions can be printed out for study. The significant part which manipulates the GWP value is the type of paper used for printing. In this inventory, woodfree uncoated paper will be used to print out the lecture notes as well as tutorial questions. The GWP of manufacturing, distribut ion, use, end-of-life stage was taken from the LCA done by the ecoinvent for the inventory of the print alternative.3.2.1 The use of printerA laser printer is used to print all the lecture notes and tutorial exercises. According to the report of LCA done by the student of University of Technology in Delft, they are using the process description of Ecoinvent database, which includes the life-time of printer, energy use during 3 different operational modes(active, stand-by and off), the print speed and average paper consumption.These numbers were all converted to an average inventory for an hour of printer use, as summarized in Table 4 below Lehmann, 2007.Process/part descriptionAmount (per hour of printer use)UnitEcoinvent nameElectricity use0.0402kWhElectricity, low voltage, production UCTE stamp paper0.214kgPaper, woodfree, uncoated, at regional storageRERLaser newspapermanScenario 1Scenario 2piecepiecePrinter laserjet, b/w, at plant GLOToner0.0644kgToner, black, used for printin g RERTransport0.0215tkmTransport, freight, railRERTable 1 The usage of printer and papers per hourIn table 4, the usage of printer, paper and toner was converted to per hour usage. This is because Ecoinvent database recorded the lifetime of a printer is about four years. However, the usage of the laserjet printer will not be operating twenty four hours per day for four years. Therefore, the inventory is converted to per hour determination.3.2.2 Paperuncoated woodfree paper is the type of paper that we used most for printing. The dataset of the production and distribution of the type of paper is based on the Ecoinvent database. And according to the database, the uncoated woodfree paper contains at least 90% of fibres in the form of chemical pulp.CalculationThe estimation of paper used in 4 years.The approximate number of paper used for 1 chapter=15 sheetsThere total chapters for 1 subject= 8 chaptersSubjects in 1 semester= 4Semesters in 1 year=2There are approximately 960 sheets of p aper used in one year. And one student will consumed approximately 3840 sheets of paper in four years time.Paper disposalThere are three types of paper disposal flows are defined in Ecoinvent, they are G139 disposal, paper, 11.2% water, to municipal incineration CH G449 disposal, paper, 11.2% water, to sanitary landfill CH G1984 paper, recycling, with deinking, at plant RERThe starting two processes, however, differ from the third. The disposal processes have economic outflow the service of the disposal of 1 kg of the paper, as what is expected. A physical mass of recycled paper is the output for the recycling flow. According to Ecoinvent, there isnt recycling paper service and recycling gives out recycled paper as output. This means that the printer not only provide service of printing, but also produce recycled paper. Part of the total process to the recycled paper and part of the total process to the use of printer were allocated. This means that the environmental impacts of rec ycling the paper as waste are taken into account.4.0 Impact AssessmentThis stage is to assess the impacts will affect on human health and the environment associated with energy and raw material inputs and environmental releases quantified by the inventory. We have done the impact assessment for the category of global warming capability (GWP). From the result, we do a comparison of CO2-equivalent between the laptop and printed paper.4.1 Break-even Point GWPBreak-even point is when the GWP of both alternatives is the same occur. This can determine which alternative is more sustainable to the environment. When the GWP of both alternatives meets at this point, their emission is equal. After that, based on different situation, which ever goes higher is considered as not sustainable.GWP (kg CO2 equivalents)Print AlternativeScenario 1Printing 3840 pages for four yearsPrinting with woodfree uncoated paper13.53Laptop225.88Table GWP values (in CO2-eq) of printed notes and laptop usage.From t he table above, the relationship between the print alternative and laptop computer between two scenarios was assumed. After that, it can generate the graph as seen in figure below.FigureFrom the figure, the impact assigned to the laptop computer remains constant as it is used daily for reading and studying. The graph shows the GWP of print alternative is much lower than the laptop computer. The denounce-even point is too outlying(prenominal) that it is probably about 70000 prints for four years.5.0 Improvement AnalysisBased on the research done, the usage of e-paper (laptops) still releases quite a high amount of CO2e which leads to Global Warming Potential. Hence, a few improvements to reduce emissions should be done. Improvements that could be done are as followsOptimization of electricity usage when manufacturing laptopsMinimize the number of transportation of laptops by distributing as many laptops as possible delivery processTurn off laptop when it is not used (i.e when takin g a break from studying lecture notes)Purchasing laptops which has Energy Star label. Energy Star is a program by US government which helps to protect environment using superior energy efficiency. (Energy Star n.d.)Public awareness give talks on managing electricity and power usageIn order to reduce the effect of global warming potential for paper, improvement can be done in the ways ofConserving paper by printing on the both sides of the paper. charter to print what is really needed. Print only a few pages that are needed instead of the whole book.Recycle the used paper and use sustainable paper too.Return the empty printing cartridges to the supplier for recycling.6.0 ConclusionFrom the life cycle assessment, we have compared the carbon dioxide equivalent of a laptop and paper for four years. It is shown that the CO2-e of a laptop is higher than paper. In other words, print alternative is a better choice to reduce the environmental impacts. It is more environmental amiable to st udy the lecture slides by printing paper instead of using laptop as paper emits less CO2e. The results above can only be applied to study lecture notes, not for office use and others.

Concepts of Ethics and Professionalism in Business
Concepts of morality and Professionalism in problemIntroductionChange is the only constant mover in e actu on the wholeyday life. It is witnessed from the St single Age to civilized age. When spay affects life it to a fault affects the environs and assembly line. The dividing line environment becomes extremely complex as adjustment inflicts variety and diversity leading to deep and fundamental ways. Change in the set, environments of chore base on the expectation of familiarity has alerted concern houses to realign its priorities. The ever-changing frugal, political, legal and sociable environment has also made the fear and caremen to consider the good approach to phone line. Therefore, there is paradigm shift from the goal of maximation of profit or wealth to respectable means to achieve them. The last 150 years digest been marked the world over for rapidity of salmagundi ushered in by the advent of technology and industrial revolution. This period has also bee n marked for its attempt to generate unquestioning faith in human solid ground and intellect. The last century has witnessed that the intellect are becoming the cornerst angiotensin converting enzymes of the society. The rapid changes confirm meliorate the standard of living, also establishing a lot of sensible relationships in and well-nigh the society.There is a growing realization all over the world that moral philosophy is virtually important for any business and for the progress of any society. morality makes for an efficient providence. ethical motive is good in itself, morals and profit go together in the long run and morality alone can cheer the society. An ethically responsible organization is one, which has drawed a culture for caring for the people and for the betterment of society as a whole. Ethics has a substantial tempt on the economy for efficient and smooth functioning. The political sympathies, the laws cannot always resolve certain key problems of th e society and business. honorable behavior enhances the quality of life. An ethically ground economy can do wonders in the way of creating wealth or society.The task of business is to optimize the outcome of economic activity. It is the economic environment of business, which is the primary coil consideration in evaluating the business tactics. The familiarize day economic environment of business is a complex phenomenon. The economic relations with the government, public, society and alliance influence the trend and structure of economy. People and society are vocalism and parcel of an organization. People want and need to be ethical not only in their private life but also in public. The people are the ultimate sufferers if the affairs of the organization were conducted unethically which are detrimental to the society. Therefore, they have a concern over this. Over the last two decades, there has been a shift in the attitudes of bodied and their executives towards ethics. A si lent revolution is in low way in business ethics today. The ideas, beliefs and attitudes associated with the profit ethic are being challenged as never before. The historical idea of the divine right of bang-up no longer applies. The changes in the values, cultures and customs lead to change, which in turn lead to re-engineering of ethics.The world of business ethics is quite broad and its tentacles spread into a number of areas in the larger sphere of business society relationship. The kindly responsibilities of businessmen, for instance, clearly involve ethics and morality. There is always a doubt in the mind of the businessmen about what is and what is not ethical. It is difficult to understand business or business society relationships, without knowledge of the ethics. Business ethics is what society expects from business. check off Twain once said To be good is noble. To tell people how to be good is even nobler.*FCS, Senior Reader in Corporate Secretaryship, Alagappa Univ ersity, Kraikudi.**Ph.D.What is Business ethics?Ethics is defined as the study of standards of conduct and moral judgment. Ethics is the study of what ought to be, what is the ultimate good and how to achieve it. People have always thought that the primary purpose of business is to serve society. Business must have a amicable commitment differentwise business cannot enjoy social sanction. It is a study of human pull throughs in respect of being right and wrong. Ethics is an attempt to discover that ought to be. Ethics forms critique of twain ultimate values and goals and the means used in trying to achieve them. The history of business ethics displays a growing recognition of the need to examine the social transformations that have impacted organization, management and society. Ethics is a mass of moral principles or sets of values about what conduct ought to be. Ethics is a written or off-the-cuff set of enters or principles governing business or profession. Ethics is a study that constitutes good and bad conduct, including related values. It has to do with fulfilling the relationship with people and society at large. When this applied in a business context, it becomes business ethics. Ethics in business has become one of the most challenging issues confronting the whole business community. Establishing ethical climate is like starting an endless marathon. The first step should be to change unethical behavior. It is an on going process. It never stops. Ethics is a contract between the business and the community based upon certain values of principles. An effective program of ethics requires involvement and commitment from all. The constituents should ensure commitment towards ethical behavior at all levels. Ethical consideration and ethical behavior should run thro the marrow of the bones and should be carried by the capillaries to all parts. Maximizing way out has made a paradigm shift towards to the concept that it should be ethically achieved. Mr.J. R.D. Tata in his own words, ethical values have too often been disregard in recent years in the belief that quicker profits would be result.Major attributes of ethicsConcept The field of ethics may be conceived as a discipline, science, study or evaluation.Content The subject matter of ethics is implicated with what is good or bad, right or wrong. head Judgment is required to determine whether human action is ethical or not. The judgment concerns the overt act, not the motivations behind it. Behavior and its cause is that what which is judged.Standards Judgment is based upon standards, which are, of course, values.value The final element of ethics therefore, is the set of values and criteria used as standards for judging human conduct.Need for EthicsBusiness ethics are very much influenced by social movements, social system and social preferences. No business can survive or grow without social harmony. Individuals values, however opera hat they may be, are not sufficient to attain the maximum level of ethical performance. Ethics and social responsibility are necessary for the survival because of the passing competitive climate that prevails today. The climate in which business operates has become cold and unfriendly to day as a result of revelations of unethical behavior that have rocked nations and the world. Ethics is crucial for an efficient and smooth operating economy. An ethically based capitalism can do wonders in the way of creating wealth for society. According to economic philosopher, Adam Smith that our system of capitalism does not work well unless it has the moral co-operation of its participants. Jewish theologian wrote Its what people do when they all are alone, when one is looking that makes all the difference between civilization and the jungle. Ethics is important because either government or legislation cannot do everything to protect society. Technology races before much faster than the government can regulate. People in an indus try often know the dangers in a particular technology better than government regulators who sit at a distance. Ethics is good in itself. Ethics is important to create a smoothly and efficiently running economy. The Bhagavad Gita asks us not consider only the fruits of our actions. It invokes the notion of passionless action. The concept of Gita of doing ones duty without seeking for the fruits, Manus concept of inheriting debts as well as property, the Mauriyan idea of answerableness provide a basis for Gandhijis belief that politics and business must work hand in hand for the development.Factors having impact on ethicsEthical considerations vary by class, structure, economic group, industry, professional group and so on. Business ethics has to be on par with the ethical code of the society in which it operates. It is essential that the business adheres to the well-established ethics. The following are the factors that creates the basis to ethical consideration (a) Value, (b) Cultu re,and (c) Transformation.VALUEValues are additions or accretions to the image. Values are not fixed. They change. As they undergo change the society and its constituents also have to undergo the process. When the values undergo a change it takes the culture along with it. Values are crucially important factor in business relationships. Values create believability with the public. It allow for certainly add value to the concern and create more credibility by being morally responsible and accountable. This creates a confidence in those who are directly and indirectly involved. An organization perceived by the public to be ethically, socially concerned will be honored and respected even those who have no knowledge of its actual functioning. Not only this enhances the credibility indoors itself but also with its employees. It creates a feeling of oneness among employees having a rough-cut goal. For an individual business values derive from multitude of sources, such as armorial bea ring of business as a social institution, the nation in which business is located, the type of industry in which it is fighting(a) and the nature. Over a period of judgment of conviction value become institutionalized with regard to business and society. These values perform two important functions. First they form as a guide to business environment. Second, they become strong motivators for people in business. They become the key factor in the system relationship of business with society. Business has certain rights but it also has certain responsibilities to society and in turn society has certain rights and responsibilities in regard to business activity. Value-ethical attitude helps management for better decision-making. The decisions are in the gratify of public, society and environment. Ethical decisions are in the interest of public, society and environment. Value added rather based ethical decision-making will make an organization and its decision-maker to look into all a spects of economic, social, politico-legal aspects.CULTURECulture is described as human environment of humans. The system aspect of culture is the set of relationship that makes it executable for human beings to create a society to pass the accumulated learning of the species from generation to generation and continue to make the accumulations of learning. Culture refers to activities, thoughts, feelings and artifacts which man acquires as a member of the society. Cultural differences pause the ethical attitude of different people. Much more emphasis is passn to building and developing relationship and much less emphasis is given to the crimp concept issues.TRANSFORMATIONTransformation is yet another reason for the change in culture and values. Transformation with regard to communication, viewing, travelling, shopping, working and playing envisage a change in the ethics and ethical practice. These phenomenal growth and development in these areas brought about a social change amo ngst public, society and business. These have improved the life style and quality of life, which in turn has created a change in the cultural and cultural values obstetrical delivery out a rotatory change in the ethical standards. Change is a permanent feature on mans social life and social system in the form of transformation. The economy as a whole has been through five revolutions in the twentieth century, which have transformed its staple fibre structure and method of functioning.IMPORTANCE OF ETHICSEthics corresponds to basic human needs. Most people want to be ethical not only in their private lives but also in their business affairs. People want to be part of the organization, because they perceive its purpose and activity to be beneficial to society. The basic ethical needs are probably one of the most cogent reasons for ethical concern on the part of organizations.Ethics create credibility with the public. A company perceived by the public to be ethically and socially co ncerned would be honoured and respected even by those who have no intimate knowledge of its actual working. Gaining the confidence of the community is springy to the business sector. Public opinion is the most powerful force in a democratic society. It is a way of achieving higher standards ethical behavior.Ethics give management credibility with employees. It provides a common language for aligning a companys leadership and its people. Ethics when perceived by employees as genuine create common goals, values and language. The management has credibility with its employees because it enjoys credibility with the public. It creates oneness among the employees.Ethics help in better decision-making. Ethical decision made by the company will always be in the interest of the shareholders, stakeholders, public and their employees. This is because respect for ethics will force the management to consider all aspects of a question both economic, social and ethical aspects.ETHICS IN MANGEMENTE thics are principles of conduct used to govern the decision-making and behavior of an individual or group of individuals. Management is concerned with making decisions within an organization. Ethics of the individual or group making decision have significant implications for the organizations stakeholders, employees, customers, shareholders, suppliers, the government and the public at large. It is important to develop code of ethics for decision-making. A code of ethics is a written document that outlines the principles of conduct to be used in making decisions. Code of ethics is based on philosophical approaches justice, individual rights and utilitarianism. The principle of justice involves making decisions based on truth, without bias and consistency. The principle of individual rights concerns making decision based on protecting human dignity. The principle of utilitarianism involves making decisions directed towards promoting the greatest number of people. The Laws relating to ethics in business speaks about consumer protection, product safety, shareholders and stakeholders rights and environmental protection. Having a code of ethics with an implementation program is the minimum requirement for reputation of the management. Ethics focus its attention on solving not only the midland problems of the concern but also of the society at large. The economy as a whole has been thro five revolutions in the twentieth century, which have transformed its basic structure and method of functioning. First, the organizational revolution led to increase in number, size and power of organizations of all types. Second, the corporate revolution expanded the scale of business enterprise and led to dominate of modern big business corporations. Third, the managerial revolution saw the emergence of a class of professional mangers who took over the active control of large corporation. Fourth, the property revolution separated ownership and management and diffused property right s within the corporation. Finally, the capitalist revolution brought about a change in the moral order of capitalism and greatly enlarged the public role of business and the economic role of government. In this changed socio-economic environment the focus of business ethics is on social responsibility. Social responsibility is a reaction to the goals of the society and the economic, technological, social and political forces that mould the society.The ethics in the business community is not alienated or any different from the ethics in the society at large. The codes of ethics, legislative changes and the standards will not result in the desired holistic change. It is the mind set of the concerned people which matter most and not the stick that forces compliance with reluctance. Hence, there is an imperative need on the part of the corporate sector and profession to create a higher standard of openness, truthfulness, verity, clarity, foil and accuracy to ensure that all the stake holders have the best possible timely information. The corporates in general and professionals in particular must adhere to the highest ethical standards and assume a positive duty to unfold and update equivocally material information.Institutionalizing EthicsA business that seriously desires to operate in an ethical environment has to institutionalize ethics by drawing up a company policy and code of ethics, familiarizing all concerned at all levels with the code of ethics and ensuring the implementation. Code of ethics is nothing but a blue print of what is going to followed and adopted by the company from then onwards. The companys ethical code should be printed and circulated to all those who deal with the company, by clearly bringing out what is unethical conduct. The company may appoint ethics committee which offer training within and outside. The duty of the committee is to report periodically to the lineup and offer suggestion for the betterment. The committee must also re view the code of ethics from time to time keeping pace with the changing environment. Business ethics has to be practiced and preached. Before setting business standards, ethics and morality have to be internalized so that they become a part of the blood stream. If the corporate becomes committed to self-imposed standards of business morality the whole countrys standards could be influenced.Development of Program of EthicsMerely endorsing a standard code or write that of another will not suffice. It is important to find out on what topics and areas require guidance.Select a prominent personality to endorse the business ethics policy.Choose a framework, which addresses issues as they affect different constituents or shareholders of the company. The usual ones are shareholders, employees, customers, suppliers, and local/national community. Some might even include competitors.The code needs piloting perhaps with a sample drawn from all levels from different locations.The code of cond uct framed should be distributed in booklet form. let go and send the code to all concerned.Values and ethics are matters of governance. The board must be notified to involve themselves for ethical policing.Practical examples of the code in action should be introduced into all areas.Training for all concerned.Review mechanism should be established.A code master needs to be appointed.facets of business ethicsStakeholder/Shareholders or other providers of moneyTransparency and openness in all dealings. Providing adequate information to the shareholders/stakeholders. The investment protection and return on investment.EmployeesHow the business values employees ? The companys policies on working conditions, recruitment, development and training, rewards, health, safety security, equal opportunities, retirement, redundancy, discrimination and harassment.Customer RelationsCustomer satisfaction. Quality of product or service dealt. Fair pricing. After-sales service.Society/ connectionThe l aws of the society and community are to be respected. Environmental protection, Pollution abatement, Energy Conservation. In short improving the standard and quality of life.GovernmentBusiness ethics from the point of view of business and businessmen is to provide information to the government in all matters that is required to be. Following the guidelines, policies and standard set up by the government. Paying the taxes that is legitimately due to the government.A growing global rolePeople around the globe are more connected to each other than ever before. Information and money flow more quickly than ever. Goods and services produced in one part of the world are increasingly available in all parts of the world. International travel is more frequent. International communication is commonplace. This phenomenon has been titled globalization. While some people think of globalization as principally a synonym for global business, it is much more than that. The same forces that allow bus inesses to operate as if national borders did not exist also allow social activists, labour organizers, journalists, academics, and many others to work on a global stage.It means communication, interconnectedness.It means accomplishing things easier, cheaper, and quicker.Something on a bigger scope than local.It means opportunity, reducing treat barriers, growth.It means that there are many different ways to do things, all of which are valid in their own right.It means a composite plant of things, an aggregate view.It means reallocating resources away from poorer nations to wealthier nations.Its meaning depends on your point of view.Globalization is a medium which touches nearly every aspect of contemporary live in the civilized world. Globalization is the engine of trade and of explosive economic prosperity. Globalization is a dynamic concept of universal proportions. The result is the pressure on business to play a role in social issues will continue to grow. There is a growing interest, therefore, in businesses taking a lead in addressing those issues in which they have an interest where government has failed to come up with a solution. It is the continuing commitment by business to behave fairly and responsibly and set up to economic development while improving the quality of life as well as of the community and society at large.Unless there is accountability and transparency in the dealings the business cannot be socially responsible. The values of accountability, social responsibility, long-term vision, and ethical behavior have become more important. The wealth maximization or profit maximization begins at the floor level leading to value addition. When once value is added the concept of social responsibility would creep in. The present day scenario is different and far from reality.The world is entering a century with unprecedented changes for peace and progress. Globalization is the buzzword in the context. Business is the silken vagabond that bi nds the whole world. Therefore globalization of ethics is needed. The need is envisaged in the following areas.Global need forStable and honest governmentsTransparency and openness to promote honesty in governmentsCommitment to internationally recognized human rightsDevelopmental programs for environmental protection, pollution control, energy conservationEvolution for world code of ethics for businessConclusionA society cannot function without a set of values. Society is undergoing social change. Business system is a product of customs and beliefs of the society in which it exists. Ethics is a study of what is right and wrong. Ethical considerations decide whether the business enterprise is on par with the societys needs. Society is undergoing social change due to ethical considerations. So long as the value systems and philosophies of business go together, society will accept it. The resultant contribution would be positive. Social and ethical challenges in business take several f orms and the impact is multidimensional and corporate governance is the key phrase. The changes that are taking place in the internal and external environment in which the business operates gave rise to a re-identification of their mission statement as BE INFORMED. BE INVOLVED. MAKE A DIFFERENCE. This new ethical standard and social attitude is blooming everywhere.References1.Bowie, Norman E Business Ethics Prentice Hall Inc., overbold Jersy.2.Davis Keith Blomstrom.R.L. Ragged Schools in the Victorian Era
beset directs in the Victorian EraVictorian generation started out in 1800s and lasteduntil 1901. During this period of sequence, children were living in poverty, thus one of the great movements of Victorian philanthropy was establishing of ragged schools to provide grooming opportunity, like its name, Ragged educates provide statement for children who are too ragged, filthy, wretch forlorn to enter any other places (Besant, 1984).The origin of ragged schooling was premier run agrounded by outhouse Pounds (1766 1839), he was a cobbler in Portsmouth and initiated by using his shop in 1818 for educational activity. John pound actively recruit children by expense time on streets and quays of Portsmouth by making contacts with children as well as bribing them with baked potatoes (Guthrie, 1847).After recruiting these children, he would then teach the girls to cook simple solid food where the ragged school cookery class is form. As for the boys, he would impart his skills set as a cobbler to them which would eventually representing industrialism. Reading, writing and arithmetic were besides taught thoroughly thus making education as a base for schooling (Montague, 1904 p.40-41).Another Ragged School would be St. Johns School which is situated at Forton, a small village in Staffordshire in England. During year 1830 to 1831 it was universe used as a Sunday School beforehand being converted to a ragged school in 1861. During 1861, boys and girls schools were built within the existing premises, thus, different sexes would be posted to their designated buildings respectively. There were as well as blackboards and destine pencils available as well as cane which is being used as implementation of punishment system for children being late or compete truancy (Turner, 1986).As children during Victorias England, it was a time where child dominate the society, thus, during this time families tends to be large which eventually conduct to overcrowding which the n leading to poor families. Poor children are often put to work at early age such work places could be textile mills and in like manner coal mines where working conditions are often deadly thus, education are something of a luxury for the children (Boone, 2005). Thus, the ragged school provides a safe environment and protective cover for children which has proper mentor in guiding skills set for them. Such protection would be to protect them from their parents who did not know how to guide a child into the by rights path (Silver, 1983 p. 20).Charles Dickens was another person whom brought the whole of Britain attention to children (Smith, 2001). He wrote the first letter on ragged schooling after he visited domain of a function Lane Ragged School which was established in 1841, which later appeared in The Daily News on February 4th 1846. He mentioned they are never taught that first distinctions between right and wrong are, from their cradles, perfectly confounded and perverted i n their minds that they come of untaught parent (Charles, 1846). Children were not taught on morality and were unable to sort out neither what is right nor what is wrong, thus resulting in higher crime rate such as pickpocketing, thus, ragged school rescues children who are facing such difficulties in their lives (Boone, 2005).Dickens (1841) also described the boys that were age from mere infants to young men who were rescued to Field Lane Ragged School when he made his centering down to the chamber room where these boys are going to live in. When he first saw the boys, he could not see any ingenuous, frank or even pleasant in their faces but their expressions and behaviours looked vicious, wicked, cunning, feeling being abandoned from all help (Boone, 2005).Some people might think that Dickens is being extremely harsh with the above comments but, he points out severe problems with the education system in Victorian England. As the teachers are mostly volunteers, basic education su ch as writing, reading and arithmetic were all being provided for these children as well as a sheltered place for these children (Macgregor, 1853). However, majority of the children were not as civilised and their behaviours constantly poses problems to the teachers. They could be listening attentively at sometimes while totally changes to another personality in a short time frame causing nuisance hence, punishment system was implemented.One of such punishment would be to forfeit the days pleasure if one is found with being disobedient to teachers. Whenever the day arrives and the children whom misbehaves realises that they were not going anywhere, they would start crying. This would serve as a reminder to them which would gain beneficial and positive result in shaping their behaviours and improving their manners (Walvin, 1982).There was another man whom made a great contribution to the Ragged School movement, Dr Thomas John Barnardo (July 1845 folk 1905) who started his own exper imental Ragged School in late 1866 (Fletcher, 2005 p.41). He met the first destitute child, Jim, in 1866 and described Jim as genuine Arab boy, friendless, homeless (Marchant, 2007, p. 342). Barnardo also mentioned that when he saw the upturned faces more of those boys, he realises the fact that all absolutely destitute and homeless, he knows himself that he must look for ways to still these boys whom were also labelled as street-arabs (Wagner, 1979).First, he started a marketing strategy for his ragged school, photographic marketing (Ash, 2008 p.180) to increase the publics awareness contact those pauper children during Victorian times as well as to raise funds for his ragged school. He would create postcards of poverty-stricken, dirty children before coming to orphanage and equivalence and contrast with the after photograph where the children are well-dressed and good-manner (Swain and Hillel, 2010). In this, much awareness was gained about how parents have failed in giving the ir child proper education and brain of own morality, thus, bringing up issues of children during that time (Ash, 2008 p. 180)Lastly, there were two logbook entries by their headmaster from Kidmore End Ragged School which started recording in 1873. 8 October 1868 beginning(a) class not well attended. Boys treasured for work for tending cattle and working in the field and 3 April 1871, Harry Castell and George Prior punished for contend truant since yesterday afternoon. There was no drill in the afternoon, the weather being damp and showery (Hendrick, 1997). From the above entries, we could deduce that children who were attending Ragged School were still constantly wanted for work however, they would be punished for truancy, thus enabling them to change their behaviours as well as for them to realise the importance of education during Victorian times.With all these evidence to support the contributions of the Ragged School has made during Victorian times, although their facilities are not as good as those normal schools, however, the intentions of the founders were the same. They wanted to build a better future for Britishs children during that time. They foresee that only when children receive more education, the country would then be able to get along (Hendrick, 1997).ReferencesAsh. The Return of the Jedi :: essays research papers
The Return of the Jedi     So far this semester, we have stu drop deadd several different sociologicaltheories of religion. These theories are built on both the cognise tarradiddle ofreligions in the world and the cultures in which they originated, as well as,appropriately enough, theoretical suggestions of how those religions, and indeedany religion at all, will survive in the future. The theory I find the most trueis Stark and Bainbridges in The Future of Religion, although I manage someelements from others, like Bergers concepts of reification and secularization.     George Lucass Star Wars trilogy, aside from being incrediblyentertaining and extremely well-made, gives us a complete portrait of a society(The Empire) and a religion (Jediism, for lack of a separate term). Although themovies are mostly devoted to the growth of the characters, throughout thetrilogy we see the society change in a drastic manner. This paper will examinethe hi story of Jediism, the current (as of the end of the last movie) status ofthe religion, and offer some suggestions as to what we can expect from Jediismin the future.          I. The Religion     To examine the future of religion as it relates to society, one mustfirst have an idea of the tenets and judgments on which the religion is based.Jediism is based solely on belief in the "force", a " worldwide energy field thatsurrounds us and permeates us". (O. Kenobi, SW) Stark and Bainbridge make thepoint that any religion based on magic or magic-like rituals is fated to die outunless the magic can work constantly and consistently. This, they argue, is whymany religions change from promising magic, which is quite verifiable (Did he,in fact, levitate?) to promising compensators, a sort of unverifiable magic. Agood example of this is the Christian Heaven. Stark and Bainbridge take it as agiven, however, that magic, or abilities that parallel magic, do not, in fact,exist. This makes an take in charge to theorize about the future of Jediism moredifficult, since the religion is based, in part, on the belief that oneness withthe "force" has the ability to confer extraordinary powers to individuals-- abelief than is vindicated numerous times throughout the series.     The internal organization of the religion is, apparently, entirelynonexistant. There is no leader, nor is there any defined structure. Much likeclassical Taoism, various masters exist, and students and supplicants must seekout a master on their own in order to learn. There is no power structure to advance in,other than the ability to eventually hone ones faith to a degree that one can

Government and Politics - Americas Addiction to War Essays -- Argumen
The joined States is addicted to war. In the same way that the drug addict seeks a euphoria from heroin, the States seeks the fringe of war and victory. Though there are dire consequences, and certain destruction, the thrill of the high is a prize to be won, no matter the cost. The euphoria of victory and the addiction to war are comparatively recent for the United States. America was a reluctant and late participant in World War One, and in the first place that, wars were fought for the conquest of the continent, or for hemispheric objectives. The notable exception was the Civil War, which was terribly destructive, and which took place entirely on American soil (the only one the Indian wars were about the conquest of land belonging to others). More American combatants lost their lives in the Civil War than in any other involving Americans. The United States of America was founded by people with a distrust of a large standing army, a distrust that lingered into the twentieth centu ry. As economically powerful as the United States was by the beginning of the twentieth century, it was not a country with a huge military. Viewed as it was then, it was easy enough to defend the country, with friendly neighbours to the north and south, and neat oceans between the US and the rest of the world. As the situation in Europe and Asia tended to become more dangerous in the 1930s, there was still very untouchable sentiment in the United States against getting involved in wars on other continents. The country was very reluctant to enter the First World War, and the intrust was that it wouldnt be sending anyone to war abroad again. Besides, the Civil War and its horrors were still part of living memory. The coming of World War Two, and the possibility of Amer... ...ar causal agent today is higher especially amongst the younger elements of the movement, there is a greater realisation of the connections between war, capitalism, and globalisation. That consciousness can be found at undercoat level, too. It does not manifest itself only at the level of abstraction and theory. I am reminded of the Liberation Theologians principle of praxis-reflection-praxis, and the advantage of this orthopraxis over orthodoxy and practice. I am as well as hopeful because, disconnected as it seems, SUV-loving Americans do seem to have in the back of their minds that oil is both finite and bad for the environment. Moreover, as the US moves reluctantly away from the oil economy, it may not have as many of the economic rationales described above to wage war, and war may even be kicked as an addiction. These are hopeful signs, and I am always one to hope.

Mononucleosis :: essays research papers
mononucleosisMononucleosis is an infectious unhealthiness of humans in which the telephone line andtissues contain mononuclear leukocytes (white blood cells with only one nucleus), either monocytes or lymphocytes. An infectious disease is a disease that ceasegive you an infection, can be transmitted by infection without actual contact,or can be caused by a microorganism. All species of animals are afflicted withinfections caused by a wide variety of organisms, from submicroscopic viruses towormlike parasites. When a person has an infectious disease like mono theorganism gains access to the patients body, survives, and then multiples. Next,the patient gets the symptoms. Then the patient may die or recoverspontaneously, or the infection may respond to specific therapy. Often there isan immunity. Infectious diseases have strongly influenced the course of historyon Earth. The organisms responsible for human infections are viruses. Virusesare unsophisticated life forms consisting o f nucleic acid, encoding genetic information ,and surface components of protein that enable them to enter cells. Viruses areunable to multiple outside of cells. Mono is found in the desoxyribonucleic acid in the body.Another name for mononucleosis is glandular fever because of the fever andswelling of the lymph nodes throughout the body. What causes mononucleosis isthe Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which is like herpes. The herpes virus besidescauses some cases of mono and other diseases. Mono usually occurs in adults 15to 30 years old, but is known to appear at any age.     Mono symptoms include fever, chills, fatigue, malaise, sore throat,head-aches, swelling of the lymph nodes (noticeable in the neck), and skinrashes. Liver inflammation may occur. Also, swelling of the upper eyelids is acommon symptom. In some cases blood may be found in the urine. The throat isoften red a membrane, white to dark gray in color and resembling that ofdiphtheria, may be present. In many cases there is a petechial rash on the softpalate. Mono is mostly transmitted by oral contact with exchange of saliva,that is why it is sometimes known as the " kissing disease. " Sharing a cup isanother way to get mono. It is not highly contagious. The incubation period is persuasion to be about 30 to 40 days. In about two/thirds of the patients thespleen is enlarged. The illness is mild to moderate, death is rare, but in somecases a patient may die of rupturing the spleen. A rash consisting of smallhemorrhages or resembling measles or scarlet fever sometimes appears. Also,pneumonia occurs in about 2 percent of the infected patients.

Changes In The Atmosphere Causing Multicellularity :: essays research papers
Changes in the Atmosphere Causing MulticellularityAbout 2.5 billion years ago, group O began slowly to accumulate in theatmosphere, as a result of the photosynthetic activity of the cyanobacteria.Those prokaryotes that were able to use oxygen in ATP production gained a strongadvantage, and so they began to prosper and increase. Some of these cells may hold back evolved into modern body-builds of aerobic bacteria. Other cells may have becomesymbionts with larger cells and evolved into mitochondria. As the tot up ofoxygen and other atmospheric gasses increased, they started blocking out deadlyu.v. rays from the sun. The suns rays made feeling outside of water nearlyimpossible. These changes made life on land possible and evolution occurred asprokaryotes gave rise to land living eukaryotes.The microfossil record indicates that the first eukaryotes evolved at least1.5 billion years ago. Eukaryotes argon distinguished from prokaryotes by theirlarger size, the separation of nucleus fr om cytoplasm by a nuclear envelope, theassociation of DNA with histone proteins and its organization into a number killdistinct chromosomes, and colonial organelles, among which are chloroplasts andmitochondria. Scientists believe that eukaryotic organisms such as the protistsevolved from the prokaryotes. There are two main theories which describe howthis transition may have occurred. The first is the endosymbiotic theory, orenosymbiosis, and the other is the autogenous theory, or autogenisis. These twotheories are not mutually exclusive, meaning one or the other could account for antithetical parts of eukaryotic cells. The endosymbiotic theory states that theformation of eukaryotic cells were symbiotic associations of prokaryotic cellsliving inside larger prokaryotes. The endosymbiotic hypothesis accounts for thepresence in eukaryotic cells of complex organelles not found in the far simplerprokaryotes. Many modern organisms contain intracellular symbiotic bacteria,cyanobacteria, or photosynthetic protists, indicating that such associations arenot grueling to establish and maintain. Endosymbiosis is said to beresponsible for the presence of chloroplasts and mitochondria in eukaryotes.Autogenisis, the alternative to the endosymbiotic theory is specialization ofinternal membranes derived originally from the plasma membrane of a prokaryote.Autogenisis could be responsible for structures like the nuclear membrane andendoplasmic reticulum in eukaryotes.There are two scenarios for which multicellularity may have occurred. Thefirst is unicellular organisms came together to form a colonial organism, then
